The Meaning of Real Love:
Caregiving as a “Sacred Opportunity”

By Dr. Michael Obsatz – February 14, 2025

Many of us will probably have times when we are called to take care of a loved one who is ill, or who has been hurt.

It is a “sacred opportunity” to accept another person with limitations, show unconditional love, and perhaps keep that person alive.

Good care involves paying attention, listening, providing food, shelter, and care, and meeting the physical and emotional needs of a loved one.

It takes empathy, compassion, and a willingness to serve another who can’t immediately give back in kind.  Some might call it a “sacrifice.”  I see it as a call from God, a reminder of our fragility and vulnerability.

Marital vows have mentioned being there “in sickness and in health.”  I always wondered why “sickness” came first and health came second.

As we age, we will probably experience numerous health challenges.  This “sacred opportunity” to serve, comfort, feed, and love another is the highest form of Love.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all who love themselves, life, the earth, and all of creation.
