Why I Don’t Like the Word “Master”
By Dr. Michael Obsatz – June 2025
.
Mastery can be defined as having control over. To “master” some information is to know it thoroughly.
But the term “Master” is sexist and racist. Think of Master and Slave. Think of Master and Mistress. To be a master is to have control, dominate something or someone. On the other hand, a mistress can be described as a sexual partner on the side.
We have Mastermind, and the Master’s golf tournament. Master is a term of Empire Consciousness and reinforces control and hierarchy.
Getting a Master’s degree is an accomplishment.
So, what is the “big deal” about this. Our language reveals our consciousness. Oneness Consciousness is about equality, compassion, empathy, and connection. Continuing to use the word “master” is reinforcing the opposite.
The Minnesota man accused of killing two, and wounding two others is complaining about his discomfort in his cell. We might ask him how comfortable does he believe his four victims are and were because of his insanity. He surely mastered the use of all of those weapons.
